Denim is the first thing that changes in the shop when fall shows up. The shorts move to the back wall, the jeans come forward, and the question we hear most at the counter is which shape to try first.
This year the answer is loose. Balloon legs, barrel legs, low and baggy, plus a couple of western pieces from Sabbi that are pure fun. Here’s the fall denim we keep reaching for, in Newport and in Kailua.
What jeans should I wear this fall?
Start with the Levi’s Middy Balloon Jean. It curves through the leg and narrows at the ankle, so you get that easy, roomy shape without looking like you borrowed someone else’s jeans. Mid rise, 100% cotton, no stretch, and it goes with a tank, a tee or a chunky knit when the wind picks up.
How do you wear barrel jeans without the waist gap?
The Levi’s Cinch Barrel Jean has adjustable cinchers on the back, so you pull it in where you need it and let the barrel leg do the rest. High rise, knee darts and a stacked hem. Tuck your top in so the shape gets the attention.
Is western denim still in for fall?
Sabbi says yes, loudly. The True Grit Denim Jacket is oversized and slouchy in a vintage wash, with a contrast brown collar, western seam details and an elastic hem that pulls all that denim into shape. Throw it over a dress or your favorite tee and go.
How far can you take the western trend?
All the way, if you want to. The Dirty Deeds Denim Chaps Jeans are a relaxed wide leg in vintage blue with chaps-inspired panels, button details and suede-look fringe down the outside of each leg. Keep the top simple and let the fringe do the talking. We only brought in a few pairs, so grab your size.
What’s the easiest fall jacket for the beach?
Our North Shore Denim Oversized Jacket, from the label. It’s roomy through the body and sleeves in a light, broken-in wash, made for the moment the trade winds pick up and you’re not ready to head in yet. Over a swimsuit after a late surf or over a tee for dinner, it works both ways.
Are low-rise jeans back?
They are, and the Levi’s Superlow Loose Jean leans all the way in. It sits on one of the lowest rises Levi’s has ever made, with a loose, relaxed leg straight out of the 2000s. Pair it with a cropped knit or a baby tee and a belt.
